It’s not really all that odd to see a smaller game developer simply stop making games for a particular system, however it is kind of odd when the two games that a particular developer actually did make for the system are two of the best games in the system’s entire library.
Ready At Dawn Studios, the development studio behind two of the PSP’s highest rated games, Daxter and God of War: Chains of Olympus, has officially completed all work on the PSP system, and has packed up and sent Sony a nice mound of boxes filled to the brim with PSP devkits.
Ready At Dawn had previously announced in March that they were preparing to stop working with the PSP in the near future, so this news isn’t all that surprising, per se. The surprising part is why a studio that is so obviously good at creating games on a particular system, would up and stop working with that system altogether.
While the company never explicitly states a reason behind abandoning the PSP, the brief summation given via the company’s blog is that they are looking to pursue other projects and ideas on other consoles.
The official ‘Sending Back of the Devkits’ was chronicled in a short but sweet posting on the Ready At Dawn company blog:
With Chains of Olympus going Gold in Japan, we’re now officially done with PSP development.
So today we sent all our devkits back and seeing all these boxes ready to be picked up definitely marks the end of an era here at Ready At Dawn.
Can’t wait to show you guys what we have in store….
With both of Ready At Dawn’s PSP projects having enough success to merit PSP bundles based around each title, Daxter having sold over 2 million copies thus far, and God of War: Chains of Olympus being the highest rated game on the system, it sure seems Ready At Dawn’s gifted touch will be missed on the PSP.
We wish Ready At Dawn the best of luck in their upcoming foray into other consoles and cannot wait to see what they come up with in the future.
