This is going to be the live and updated post about our initial impressions of the Qtrax beta. For those of you who do not know Qtrax is, think subscription based (and of course DRMd) unlimited free music downloads, from the RIAA. Yeah, the last part kind of got us too, but just pretend they are buying you drinks, or something. Many of you out there seem to be skeptical about downloading software created by the RIAA. Call us your guinea pigs — we will walk you through the whole process and if we aren’t sued by the end, you know it’s safe. Read the live blogging and walkthrough after the break.
12:00 A.M - Qtrax was supposed to be available as of midnight EST, and it seems as if their site is getting hit pretty hard. No link for it yet.

10:17 A.M - More than eight hours later since the last update, and there is still no sign of a download link. What is going on? We are going to investigate further. Keep checking this post for updates.
1:00 PM - The site is now displaying to some users: “Due to massive demand, the beta download is happening in stages.” More on this soon.
3:27 PM - It seems as if Warner, EMI, and Universal are now saying that they have nothing to do with Qtrax. Qtrax said that they thought they would have had an agreement by now. Interesting — this may be a very bad thing and the reason behind the delay.
3:36 PM - BREAKING - We have just found a link on a German website to download the .2 beta version of Qtrax. We are downloading it right now, so we will let you know what language it is in and if it works or not very shortly.

3:57 P.M - Check out the screenshot gallery below. Not much working here yet, but the layout of Songbird works pretty well.
7:43 P.M - The Qtrax beta is now officially live! We will post our review shortly.

5It’s kind of hard to beat a semi-legal system that works, with one that doesn’t
I hope the RIAA are enjoying their crash course on the interwebs and midnight launches.

6I don’t think they have deals with any of the 4 labels that they claim. 3 of the 4 have denied having any contract with Qtrax/BLLN. The other is Sony and they haven’t commented.

8Eh, I can wait until tomorrow, but it does sound cool. Sure DRM isn’t the best, but if you really want freedom buy and rip the CD.

9Didnt a lawyer recently say that ripping CDs was also in violation of their copywrite laws? /finds article

10Well they’ve unofficially said it’s not considered fair-use, but a lawyer saying something doesn’t mean anything.

no images on their site for their midnight release? maybe they’re busy running off with the cash.

13I’ve been clean sober from illegally downloading music for nearly two years now, and been waiting for something like this since then. Lets hope it works out.

16This doesn’t look good. The only music avaliable is from SkreemR. And they’re just as random as anything searched from something like Limewire.
