Madden NFL 09 is a milestone edition of EA’s long running series, not because it has some revolutionary new features or anything like that, but 09 is actually the 20th edition and as there’s been a new Madden annually since its debut in 1988 that means that the 20th edition marks the 20th anniversary of the series. Go Madden.
The back of the box may claim that the game has more than 85 new features and enhancements, although you’d have to possess the eye of a hawk to single them all out as most are just mere tweaks. To be fair, it would be impossible to keep coming up with barrel loads of new options and ways to play the game each year, although EA somehow make their annual updates worthwhile, and Madden NFL 09 is no exception, with some pleasing new additions.
Other than the monstrosities that make up the monster designs of a survival horror game, as a whole the genre is short on innovation. The Siren series though, is a genuinely fresh experience.
Siren has all the hallmarks that fans desire from the genre. It’s tense and unnerving, and has some seriously freaky monsters (which has to make you wonder what kind of sick and twisted dreams the designers have at night), but it’s also a survival horror-cum-stealth game, where hiding is very much an option and is actively encouraged throughout. Siren: Blood Curse is a reimagining of the original game (currently only available on the PlayStation Store, in which it can be downloaded in either separate chunks or as a full 9.5 GB game) very much fit’s the above description.
If you’re a core gamer looking for the next challenging game after completing the likes of Ninja Gaiden II, then Hellboy: The Science of Evil is definitely not the one for you. This is a game that doesn’t require any dedicated practice and hasn’t even got any difficulty levels to speak of, thus it is a game that has seemingly been made with one audience in mind, and I’m not talking about the superior beings that can give Ninja Gaiden a good thrashing without breaking a sweat.
Hellboy: The Science of Evil may have been released shortly after Hellboy II: The Golden Army, although the game doesn’t follow the plot of the movie and is instead a completely fresh narrative. All good you may be saying to yourself, although the actual plot is a total mess and is only saved by Ron Perlman reprising his role as the titular Hellboy. Perlman is as excellent here as he is in the movies and fortunately gets plenty of humorous lines to chuck out.

To many Matt Damon is Jason Bourne, and therefore many will become disappointed when finding out that in this gaming adaptation, Bourne simply doesn’t look or sound like the actor. However, you can’t say it is a poor copy because he’s not actually meant to resemble the movie version of the amnesiac with a murky past. You see, if one wants to portray the likeness of an actor in your games, in this silly world we live in, you have to purchase the rights to use their overly expensive faces and get their permission to do so. Sierra either failed on one or the other, or perhaps they didn’t even attempt to get Damon’s likeness and voice. The Bourne series did begin with a trilogy of books from the late Robert Ludlum after all.

If you have about 10 minutes to spare, and want to watch an angry Batman impersonator yell about crappy Batman games, then go ahead and watch this. It’s good for a few laughs, but it’s bad for a good time consuming option.

Gameloft’s new mobile game, Chuck Norris: Bring on the Pain, lets “You and Chuck Norris Put the ‘Beat Down’ to the Bad Guys This Summer.” Play as either Ranger Chuck or Commando Chuck through several stages while beating down baddies. The real reason this game is in mobile form only is because gamers may actually believe they are Chuck Norris if they play on a console with better graphics. Seriously, this is what we have been told.
Battlefield has always been a multiplayer focused series, though obviously with the freshest entry, Battlefield: Bad Company, effort has been spent on both the single and multiplayer components. But at least in regards to the campaign mode, it seems DICE’s old habits die hard.
Nexon, a studio that has brought us many online multiplayer games in the past, thought it would be a good idea to create a realistic and free first person shooter for the PC. Well, after a lot of planning and hard work, this thought became a reality with their new release of their shooter, Combat Arms. For those of you familiar, Combat Arms can be compared to the style of another shooter, War Rock, however, Combat Arms does not strive on premium paying members and promises to never show an advertisement or charge for anything.
Mirror’s Edge looks like one hell of a roller coaster ride, and is now officially on the top of my most anticipated games. Below is a live gameplay demonstration from EA’s press meeting at E3 2008, containing 5 minutes of “holy shit” moments which I’m sure will make the real climaxes and other visual elements of the game simply mind-blowing. Mirror’s Edge is summing up to be one of the most intriguing titles of the year.
Side note: this is off-screen footage, but the game still looks stellar!
